Ship Manager in Training (SMiT/COiT)
The Ship Manager/Commanding Officer in Training program will provide
trainees with the needed experience to become an SM/CO of a Star Trek:
A Call to Duty ship or station. During training, candidates will plan
and run a mission arc that will last no more than 3 months in length.
This will include keeping up posting levels, providing direction for
the crew, initiating posts, keeping accurate posting records, and handling
any crew/player conflicts.
Throughout this 3 month training, the SMiT/COiT will receive helpful feedback
from the USS Serpens’ Ship Manager and eventually the crew. This will
give the SMiT/COiT the needed experience and learning environment to develop
the needed leadership skills and administrative abilities required from Ship
Managers.
Below is a detailed list of tasks the SMiT/COiT will perform during their mission
arc. This list offers examples and a clear run down of how certain tasks should
be performed. If any questions are pertaining to these tasks, please ask the
Serpens’ Ship Manager for assistance.
Mentors
Being a Ship Manager is quite different than being a player. Therefore, all
SMiTs/COiTs will not only be guided by the Serpens’ Ship Manager, but
by a Mentor as well.
A mentor is a Fleet, Ship, or Station Manager in the PBeM Division. The mentor
is there for the SMiT to give advice, constructive criticism, and answer questions.
When possible, the Mentor will check the mission arc planned before the candidate
sends it to the Serpens’ Ship Manager for final approval. The mentor
will be added to the ship’s roster for the duration of the candidate’s
training.
The SMiT/COiT may find his/her own Mentor or the Serpens’ Ship Manager
will assign one. It is key that the mentor be someone the candidate is comfortable
with. Please check
here for a list of approved Mentors.
Planning the SMiT/COiT Mission Arc
Two weeks prior to SMiT/COiT, the trainee must email the Serpens’ Ship
Manager the mission arc breakdown for approval.
When planning the mission arc, the SMiT/COiT should check the ship’s
roster and verify with the Serpens’ Ship Manager if any crewmembers are
currently on LOA, etc. The mission arc should not be overly complicated nor
require too many NPCs. This mission will only last 3 months, and the arc should
try to be concluded near the final week if possible.
Mission Orders
Once the SMiT/COiT’s arc has been planned and approved, the SMiT/COiT
may wish to write mission orders to send to the crew. These Mission Orders
may be given by the Commanding Officer character to the entire Senior Staff
or may be written out as a form submitted to the crew by Admirality. It will
be the SMiT/COiT’s decision as to how these will be given.
The USS Serpens NCC-78621
The USS Serpens is a Nova Class Variant vessel that is located in Holo-Building
One of Starfleet Academy. Because of this, the USS Serpens can go virtually
anywhere throughout the Quadrant.
The Senior Staff of the USS Serpens are simply officers who are trained in
various fields, holding various positions and ranks just as they would on a
regular starship. They do not get promoted due to the program rules, but they
are evaluated at the end of each Command Training session.
The SMiT/COiT’s character will meet the crew either aboard the USS Serpens
in Holo-Building One or in Starfleet Academy before reporting to the Serpens.
The SMiT/COiT’s mission arc must take place aboard the USS Serpens, not
on Starfleet Academy grounds.
Command Character
The SMiT/COiT candidate will play the highest ranked PBeM Division character.
This ensures that the SMiT/COiT will not be focused on character development,
but on running the missions. Hopefully, this will free the trainee up to place
more details within the arc. This character should continue to be played on
the trainee’s normal vessel. The Serpens’ Ship Manager will make
sure that all posting requirements are being met by the trainee.
The SMiT/COiT trainee’s and Mentor’s email address will be added
to one of the NPC slots on the Serpens’ roster by the Serpens’ Ship
Manager.
Monthly Posting Reports
The SMiT/COiT will be required to create their own form of a Monthly
Posting Report that should be submitted to the crew on the first of each
month. These posting reports should contain announcements for the ship and
the the posting statistics of each individual player. These reports will
need to be posted to the
Serpens' Subspace Board.
Monthly Posting Report Example
Intelligence Report
In the PBeM Division, Intelligence Reports are to be submitted bi-monthly.
The SMiT/COiT trainee is required to submit this Intelligence Report to the
Intelligence Reporter, Serpens Ship Manager, and Command Training Division
Manager by the 30th of each month the report is due.
Intelligence Report directions will be emailed to the SMiT/COiT trainee by
the Serpens’ Ship Manager.
Subspace Board Moderation
A Ship Manager in the PBeM Division will be required to monitor their
ship's Subspace Board. The SMiT/COiT will be required to post all Monthly
Posting Reports and Intelligence Reports on the
Serpens' Subspace Board.
Moderator status will be granted to the SMiT/COiT upon assignment to the
Serpens.
For general assistance on how to use the Subspace Board, please check
out this Subspace Tutorial.
Commanding Officer Interview
In order to become a Ship Manager, a player must undergo an interview by
the Fleet Manager. The Serpens' Ship Manager will send the SMiT/COiT a
mock interview to be filled out. This interview will be treated as if it
is the real thing, and comments will be made on each response by the Ship
Manager and additional staff member.
Crew Evaluations
At the end of the SMiT/COiT’s tenure, the SMiT/COiT will need to evaluate
the crew of the ship with the Executive Officer. These evaluations will be
posted on the ODN, so they need to be professional: including positive and
constructive criticism. Should the SMiT/COiT decide a commendation, medal,
or reprimand is in order, the Serpens’ Ship Manager will assist the SMiT/COiT
with the necessary paperwork.
SMiT Evaluations
At the end of the SMiT/COiT’s tenure, the SMiT/COiT will be evaluated
by the crew of the USS Serpens. These comments will be placed on the ODN and
made available to the trainee and all game staff members.

Communication
Communication is extremely important during the SMiT/COiT’s mission arc.
The SMiT/COiT should not hesitate to ask any questions at all!
